About Me
I'm Jarrod Sherwin, a Game Designer and Developer using games to make the world a better place.
I decided that I wanted to be a game designer while I was still in elementary school after my experiences with Nintendo 64 multiplayer. Games like Super Smash Brothers, Pokemon Stadium, and Mario Kart instilled a love for playing games with friends that lasts to this day. Despite some initial resistance from my family ("Making video games isn't a real job!") I still wanted to become a game designer.
I studied as a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Game Design major at DigiPen Institute of Technology. There, I learned C++, C#, Unity, higher math skills, Visual Studio and many lessons in game design.
After graduating I worked with a startup called Dragon Foundry to help prototype the game that later released as Nova Blitz. From there I joined Amazon where I built an internal gamification suite called FC Games. Most recently I've worked with indie studios Poorly Timed Games and Left Turn Studios on their projects as a Unity Developer and Game Designer.
Some of my favorite games include role-playing games like Chrono Trigger and the Tales of series, strategy games like Warcraft and Civilization, Card games like Inscryption and Magic: The Gathering, and other co-operative experiences (Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Mythforce, and tabletop RPGs come to mind). There's too many great games to list; here's some more - Old School Runescape, Storybook Brawl, Final Fantasy I & II Dawn of Souls, Wildermyth, Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling, Slay the Spire (and Downfall fan expansion).
You can find me on twitch at twitch.tv/redmagefive where I stream all sorts of Pokémon challenges and am always happy to chat game design. I'm fascinated by self-imposed challenges, player created gameplay formats, and new and innovative ways to play.
Some of my other interests include reading all sorts of things, almost anything related to space or space travel, listening to old and new kinds of music. I also enjoy snowball fights, recreational boating, fighting hordes of zombies for survival, building beach fires and roasting marshmallows.
Lately I've been playing:
Magic: The Gathering
Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition
Pokemon 3D (fan game)
Mario Kart 8
Fall Guys
Tabletop Simulator (playing lots of mods like X-Wing 2.0, Villainous, and rpgs!)
Projects/Organizations I'm involved in:
DigiPen (Alumni)
Games Done Quick (Long time viewer, long time donor)
